Ten for Licey -One for the records

Photo: Reuters
The bitterness of losing the national championship is now forgotten. The Tigers won their record 10th Caribbean title on the field of their nemesis and last year's Caribbean champion. Licey -playing on Puerto Rico's vacant spot- becomes the first runner-up team to win the Serie del Caribe. It's the 17th Caribbean title for a Dominican Team.

ESPN Zone too good for Serie del Caribe?
Those who are lucky enough to have an ESPN Zone restaurant in their city will notice that they don't transmit any games from Serie del Caribe in any of the hundreds of TV sets available. This is a little dumb considering the games broadcast are on ESPN Deportes, a channel owned by (duh) ESPN. Every city ESPN Zone restaurants are located, except Las Vegas, has at least one MLB team. In a time when the Superbowl is just over, March Madness is not there yet and basketball and hockey aren't still in full gear, this would be the event to have for drawing crowds. Apparently, they don't think so.

Movie about a Dominican Player a hit at Sundance

This is a little late, but the movie "Sugar", directed by the same guy who did "Half Nelson" was considered one of the bright spots at the Sundance film festival last month.
In "Sugar," the "Half Nelson" team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck simply follow the fortunes of a young Dominican Republic baseball hopeful (Algenis Perez Soto) as he visits the States to try out for the fictional Kansas City Knights. This is an unusual sports movie that focuses on the progress of the player but pays virtually no attention to the team. For Sugar, his form is the be-all and end-all -- if he fails to make the cut, it's back to a life of poverty and struggle. Unless, of course, there's a third way.I hope this movie gets into the theaters soon. I found "Half Nelson" pretty boring, but it still earned an Oscar nomination for Ryan Gosling.

Licey trying to make history, but Aguilas on its heels

Two days after Licey took command of the Series by defeating the Aguilas in the first game ever Licey was the home team at Estadio Cibao, the (now disqualified) Yaquis handed them their first defeat. Aguilas lost to the Venezuelan Tigres, but any false move can put then back in first place. If Licey is the winner, it will make history as the first runner-up to win the Series, win its record 10th Caribbean championship and will do it at the home of the hated Aguilas. If the Aguilas win it, it will seal its dominance over the Licey and the rest of the Caribbean teams.

Aguilas and Licey 2008- round two
The Dominican duopoly of Aguilas Cibaeñas and Tigres del Licey came on top this weekend at the Serie del Caribe in Santiago. The Dominican teams won close games against their guests Tigres de Aragua (Venezuela) and Yaquis de Obregon (Mexico). Licey, with 9 Serie del Caribe titles, is the all-time winiest team in the tournament. Aguilas, has the most Dominican League championships with 20. Can Licey make history and become the first runner-up ever to win the Series? Or will the home team Aguilas continue its dominance? The Big Game will answer that!
